Zippers... again.

Seriously. I´m beginning to doubt my obsession with zippers is not within the "normal" limits anymore. You tell me. I saw these pumps on VenusZine and I just have to make these shoe-zip-accessories for myself. One zipper rolled up to a rose shape and fastened on the shoe with a elastic band (or something). To get that super sexy trashion pin-up look.

OutsaPop Trashion column on MissMix

I started writing a trashion column for a Finnish teen magazine called MissMix. The first story came out in their October issue. This issue features tutorials on melting plastic bags to t-shirts and making a lego-bowtie (to be worn as a necklace or hair accessorie).

A while ago I blogged about Dimitri Scheblanov and his drawing t-shirts. This fall Mina Perhonen has a similar dress in their collection. The look can be recreated with some old white bedsheets and textile markers.

Scarfs up!

Since Dolce & Gabbana brought the ladies patterned silk scafs back in their FW08 collection, I´ve noticed an increase in remade scarf fashions on Etsy. Janavi creates dresses and tops, Herman Huckleferry makes very inventive neck scarf reconstructions he calls Neckerchiefs, Wobashka makes scarf chokers (to update that boring office blouse) and Leafpeople scarf pillow pets. I definately see this as a trend to last many more seasons so stock up on silk and satin scarfs!

Material samples to trashion mosaik

I´ve always said that a large quatity of anything will make great trashion. Material samples are great to use in your projects since they usually come in a variety of colors and they are usually about the same size. Depending on the material they can be used to create surfaces for home decor or mosaic-like details for clothing or accessories. If you see color samples in your local store, ask them when they will be thrown away and leave your number so you know when to collect them. Especially import companies (businesses that sell to retailers) have large quantities of material and color samples at their showroom that usually are tossed to garbage after the season is done. I´m sure most would be delighted to give them free to someone for reusing. I have collected seasons of leather belt sample pieces. So far I have not made anything of them but when I do I know it is going to be fantastic. I especially look forward to my collegues faces when they recognise the material :)

Snoogilypoof made this awsome floor remake by tiling it with 2500 laminate floor samples she had accuired from interior design and architect companies. Collecting material will not be a quick project but when you have enough the result will definately make it all worth wile!

What is your brand identity?

Most of us cut out brand tags and wash tags from new clothes because they itch and won´t stay in place. Or because some of us just don´t do logos. Other´s cut them out to make clothes. Undone Clothing has sewn a jacket in the spirit of Mr. Margiela. I wonder what Naomi Klein would think about this jacket..?

Yarborough Jewelry has designed a collection of knit covered jewelry. They also make necklaces from thread spools. Covering bangles with excess wool thread from your knitting projects and knit from recycled sweaters is a good way to match tour jewelry to your knits. Philip Lim SS09 zipper dress

Although using zippers to create and cover surfaces in dresses is nothing new it seems the trend will last for a couple of seasons. Many FW08 collections features zips but also the new SS09 collections have them, Philip Lim collection for example. Sewing wips to a dress in this way is a fast way to upgrade any old dress because the sewing can be done with machine. The only this is that for this kind of projects you´ll need looog zips (90cm ->). The kind you use for overalls and sleeping bags. I´m sure this will not be the only collection to feature zips next spring. I´ll keep you posted.

DIY Van Noten

We´ve all seen (and loved) the FW08 Dries Van Noten bangle necklace. JanaviNYC made her own version. I love the color composition. The best thing is that this kind of necklace can be changed to complement different colored and styled outfits! You can use bright colored plastic bangles for 80´s styled outfits and wood, metal and marocco styled bangles for hippie/folk styled outfits. Check out also JanaviNYC´s Scarf clothing set and Janavi Etsy shop. She has created all sorts of tops and dresses from vintage scarfs. My favorite is this oilpaint styled top made from Guggenheim Museum scarf.

Where to find the coolest, most inspirational new designers? On StyleBubble´s blog of course. Nathan Jenden is one of the new names that cought my eye. I just adore this fabric origami dress from his SS09 collection. I have to look up some books about origami because this look is just too good to miss but I have no idea how this is done..

Steampunk finger accessorie tutorial

Fall collections seen to be have a flair of goth this season. I´ve always wanted one of those claw-fingerjewelry thingies for myself but never found the right sort of style. Then I found this.. Steampunk finger accessorie tutorial by Robbtoberfest at Instructables that got him a first prize in the sites tutorial competition. Looks cool and is quick and easy enough for anyone to make with household items. "I use a touchpad GPS regularly at work and lost the pen stylus a long time ago; it was inconvenient anyway trying to hold the stylus, GPS unit, and drive an ATV at the same time. So I made some finger stylussss? Stylii? from old water jug handles for work. For this Instructable I added some extra parts for fun Steampunk styling." says Robbtoberfest. Handy, literately.

Shrugs and capes are an essential piece to fall wardrobe in any season and trend. I´m obsessed about them at the moment. They are relatively easy to make. You´ll need a oval or retangle shaped piece of knit or fabric, fold it from the centre and sew 8 inches (40cm) from the edges to the centre to make the sleaves. Capes on the other hand need hardly any pattern making and use simple fastenings. Volanges and ruffles always look stylis on these. Most shrugs are fast to make from fabrics and recycled sweater pieces so they make an exellent addition to your shops collection or wardrobe. Like shoes and bags, you need a few to be worn in different occations. Below some fabulous shoulder fashions I found from Etsy. Inspirational styles and cuts that can be made from various materials for different dressing styles. Crochet tablecloths for romantics, chunky knits for chilly evenings, corduroy and woolfabrics for steampunks, old 70´s curtains for retros... What ever you have laying around a couple of feet or square metres.
