After almost a year "in progress" I´m finally made my leather scale dress in the shape that I can wear it in public. It is still a bit unfinished as I want to also cover the sleeves and some more of the front with the leather scales. But meanwhile I can wear it if I want. Cool isn´t it? This DIY project was inspired by the works of Jose Castro Fall 2009 collection. Mikko was wearing my zipper necklace in the NRJ Fashion Awards 2009 event where these photos were taken. To make yourself a dress like this you´ll need:
Wool/cotton/leather garment
one 80´s leather jacket to cut
leather/textile glue
scissors
1. Adjust the dress by sewing so it fits you perfectly
2. Cut the leather jacket apart.
3. Cut each leather bodice and sleeve piece in to different sized (between 1/4 inches to 2 inches) squares.
4. Cut all squares to circle or oval shape. Cutting is the most time consuming phase so don´t think you´ll be done in one evening...
5. Put the dress on to a fitting dummy and start guing the scales. I used a cotton swap to apply the glue on to the scales (top part only so they can be placed partially on top of each other). I started gluing smaller pieces first on to the collar and then worked my way down.
I´ll try to get you more tutorial photos in the near days. BTW: IM LOOKING FOR A SPACE IN HELSINKI AREA TO HOST A TRASHION DIY EVENING/WEEKEND. Let me know if you know a place we could have it in and I´d be happy to come and show you personally how this and all my other projects are made.
