Balenciaga shirt vol. (another post)

W Magazine Steven Meisel March2011

Again I´m posting about this.. Sorry, but this just won´t leave my head. This summers Balenciaga collection had a new version of a plain white shirt that is just too amazing to pass. It has it all. An androgynous yet feminine look, sharp modern shape, infinate styling possibilities.. and most importantly it is DIYable. You can just leave it white and do the hem and sides ...or go with the full monty and spray paint, metal decorate (collar) and polkadot fabric paint it. And, if you look at the detail photo below, the painted leather biker vest is also quite rad. Take an old leather jacket, cut out the sleeves and paint animal prints with leather paints (available at craft shops). More the merrier, I say.

Mango and Not Just A Label are looking for new talent!

Mango and Not Just A Label are looking for new talent!

"NOT JUST A LABEL is delighted to introduce its new collaboration with iconic Spanish brand, MANGO. For this year’s ‘El Botón’ - MANGO Fashion Awards (MFA), the two fashion staples have teamed up to help young designers build their collections and gain recognition for their hard work. NOT JUST A LABEL (NJAL), the leading global directory for emerging fashion designers, will direct the participants and offer its support by being the liaison between MFA and the designers. By helping them gain exposure, NJAL will supervise the competitors, as one designer is chosen to receive the internationally renowned and ample prize by a prestigious panel.

With the needed expertise in discovering young talent, NJAL will collaborate with MFA to promote and support the contestants and finalists, giving them direction. The highly reputable award, recognised for being one of the most important and generous in the world, gives one deserving designer the financial support needed to further their collections. With MFA’s prize of €300,000, this Award is the largest sum offered to date in a competition of this type.

NJAL insists that each of the ten finalists will receive €18,000 from MANGO, which covers all production costs for the collections being judged. Because the interests of the designers are always put first, MFA and NJAL are happy to announce that throughout this competition, there will be no transfer of intellectual property rights and designers will retain ownership of all designs produced. Sharing such high standards means guaranteed excellence. NJAL is pleased to be the official partner and backbone for the launch as well as the application process for next year’s ‘El Botón’, giving MANGO the opportunity to communicate, interact and collaborate with over 5,000 fashion designers from around the world.

NJAL is excited to connect young designers with such an important competition. Collaborating with MFA is a significant step in NJAL’s progression and furthers their ongoing support for new talent. The online platform is proud to represent a competition that genuinely helps these young designers, and that understands what struggles a designer must overcome to reach success.

Supported by Central Saint Martins, Institut Français de la Mode, Istituto Marangoni, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and l’Escole Superior de Disseny, and following an impressive judging panel including Valentino, Oscar de la Renta and Jean Paul Gaultier, the MFA will launch its 4th edition, announcing a new panel in the spring, 2011. The new registration period will commence on 15 February and designers will have until the end of July to present their applications. Therefore, the latest date that must be stamped on the letter containing the applications is 31 July 2011. The finalists will be announced in mid-November 2011.

The MFA is open to all young designers who are under 35 years old. They must also have already marketed their collection (even if only on a small scale). Candidates who have not marketed their collection, but have had at least three years’ experience in the fashion industry may also participate in the competition, as long as they can provide evidence of this. To enter, applicants must submit their application form, CV, cover letter (max. 300 words), evidence of two commercial collections (ten outfits each), a written description of these collections (max. 300 words), a draft of ten outfits for the upcoming Autumn Winter 2012 season, and a signed statement, certifying that the designer holds all rights to the designs presented."

2 in 1 t-shirt dress - Take off your clothes

Take Off Your Clothes double t-shirt dress 1

Have I already told you that I LOVE everything this guy makes? I´m so happy to see him make it to I Don´t Like Mondays. This t-shirt re-styling project of his for example is just pure genious. Two extra large t-shirts sewn together from the neck openings makes one übercool morphed 2 in 1 t-shirt dress. Made with only one seam (+ two more if you want the slevees to be pockets)! That is some amazing re-designing. The neck opening must be as wide as your chest, below bust. If it is too small, you can open it up a bit, by cutting it bigger all round. Notice that cutting just one inch will make a large difference! I´m sure the original dress has also other stuff done to it to improve the fit, but basically it is that simple.

Check out Take Off Your Clothes´s photogallery at Flickr and shop at I Don´t Like Mondays.

Bullet with butterfly wings

DIY David Coma inspired bullet casing dress LBD

David Coma has collaborated with Topshop with a small capsule dress collection. It is very beautiful but all I could think of was where to source two or three kilos of used and empty rifle bullet casings so I could DIY my own from a classic little black dress. The bullet cases cannot be sewn as they have no holes in them but they can be attached with narrow elastic band sewn to loops. Etsy sellers have some available but this projects recuires bags full of them, so I suggest asking a local shooting club for some. If I remember correctly they are a problem for shooting clubs as they are polluting the ground if left outside in the shooting range.

Sorry for the Finnish post guys, but this refashion competition is only for Finns..!

MissMix tutorial - t-shirt body

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit photo Fabian Björk

Wanna make one of your old t-shirts into a handy 90´s styled bodysuit? I did and made a tutorial on it to MissMix magazine outIN palsta, March 2011 issue. Top photo Fabian Björk, Model Elli, clothes Diesel.

You´ll need:
big t-shirt
one of your own tees (for sizing)
elastic lace ribbon
scissors
your underpants
sewing machine
pins
2-3 snap on buttons

Tarvikkeet:
• XXL-kokoinen t-paita
• istuva t-paita (omasta vaatekaapista)
• pitsikuminauhaa
• sakset
• alushousut
• ompelukone
• neuloja
• 2–3 nepparia

HOW TO MAKE IT:

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit STEP 1
1) Unravel the hem. Place your underpants on top and cut the hem.
1] Pura t-paidan helma auki. Aseta alushousut paidan helman päälle ja leikkaa helma niiden avulla oikeaan muotoon.

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit STEP 2
2) Measure the crotch piece from the underpants (height and width). Cut two pieces from the t-shirt left over pieces to match these from the left over fabric.
2] Mittaa alushousujen haarakappaleesta, kuinka korkean ja leveän haarakappaleen tarvitset. Leikkaa kaksi haarakappaletta paidan kavennuksen jälkeen ylijäävästä kankaasta.

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit STEP 3
3) Place your own correct sized shirt on top and cut extra fabric from sides and sleeves.
3] Aseta paidan päälle t-paita, joka istuu sinulle hyvin. Käytä t-paitaa mallina ja leikkaa kustomoitavasta paidasta ylimääräinen leveys pois sivuilta ja hihoista.

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit STEP 4
4) Turn right sides facing each other and sew sideseams.
4] Käännä oikeat puolet vastakkain ja ompele sivusaumat.

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit STEP 5
5) Pin the crotch pieces to the back piece so that the back piece is places between the two. Sew.
5] Neulaa haarakappaleet takakappaleen alareunaan kiinni niin, että takakappale jää haarakappaleiden väliin. Ompele.

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit STEP 6
6) Fold and pin hem. Sew lace elastic band with a zig zag stitch.
6] Kavenna sisemmän haarakappaleen reunoja noin 0,5 cm. Käännä ja neulaa koko helma. Ompele helmaan pitsinauha siksakilla.

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit STEP 7
7) Fold crotch piece ends and sew.
7] Käännä haarakappaleiden päätyreunat ja ompele.

OutsaPop tutorial t-shirt bodysuit STEP 8
8) Sew snap on buttons by hand.
8] Ompele nepparit haaraan.
