Melted plastic bags styled with lego bowties

Make your t-shirt a changing canvas for your Trashion Plastic Artwork! 10 minute fun with cutting plastic bags and melting them to t-shirts. This technique is not permanent. The plastic will stay on a few uses and should be removed before washing the garment (it will come off in the washing machine). Check out my tutorial on Fusing plastic bags to t-shirts and knitwear. This will look great with my lego-bowties! I´m planning to make a few of these bowties for sale in my Etsy shop.

Yes, the zipper necklace is unisex.

Unisex, what an outdated word. But unfortunately it´s the only one I have do descride that something suits both genders. Soo, my zipper necklaces are unisex. I didn´t think they were until a photographer (guy) friend of mine saw my necklace, tired it on and wanted his own. Of cource I had to make him one. He makes it look good. Susie Bubble, a London girl whom I recently made one necklace to, noticed this also when his boyfriend tried it on. Sorry Susie, it seems this piece has to be shared :) I love the way it looks with guy-cardigan though! I might have to try it myself...

Trashionista group in Flickr

As you know I´m admin of a group called TRASHIONISTA - Sustainable style and recycled fashion in Flickr. We have over 1000 members so far! I created this group to support sustainable fashion thinking and all you crafty trashionistas out there. If you have made, sewn, knitted, reconstructed fashion pieces, clothes or accessories from recycled materials or eco-friendly materials, this group is for you. Come and show us your talent! Thank you for all who have contributed so far. Below some of my favorites. Reduce Repair Reuse Recycle - TRASHION!

Dress and hat by Sunshine Loves You

Recycled fabric bunny called Betty by JunkerJane.

Patchwork dress by eviegreenpixie.

Reconstructed dress and zipper corset by LoriMarsha.

Knit reconstruction by -astronette-

String scarf by psarokokalo.

Converse belt by rachelyra.

Trashion inspiration to recycle, create and.. write.

When I started sharing my inspiration books and trashion projects on the web, I thought they could be used only on crafts. But inspiration is so much more and I should know that! It can be the driving force to any kind of creating and creative thingking, in this case writing. "Trashion passion", is a short story written by Merc aka Sylvia Petter. She is an "Australian in Austria" who writes fiction, essays and poems. Finding her short story today really made my day because I think it captured so well the feeling I have when making my trashion projects and the trashion ideology. I felt like reading my diary. Thank you Sylvia for this story!! I love it. My favorite part is: “Why?” they asked. “She needs them,” he said. They shook their heads.". You know exactly what my husband has to endure daily... :)

TRASHION PASSION by Sylvia Petter

She recycled him. Right from the first question: “Got any old jumpers?”
“They´re for the needy,” he said.
She looked out at him from under her fringe. “They´re fashion conscious, too. Give me what they wouldn´t want.”
“Anything?”

He gave her his teabags and ties, old jeans, zippers and ski gloves.
“More,” she said, and so he set off to ask all his friends.
“Why?” they asked.
“She needs them,” he said.
They shook their heads.

“All this enough now?” he asked with arms laden.
She nodded and arranged piles on the floor.
“Why?” he said softly.
She winked, shook her head, just said: “Wait and see.”

She worked for hours on end, days and weeks, and all the while he sat cross-legged and watched her.

She frilled all his ties and sewed them together and made them into a long shiny skirt.
“You´ll need a bodice,” he said, his eyes caressing her breasts. “Better still. We could stay here forever.”
She blew him a kiss and arranged all the tea bags, strings hanging down like Swarovski pendants.
“A necklace perhaps?”
She blew him a prfft! And proceeded to triangulate all her zippers until she had a collar like Comme des Garcons.
“What if I take you walking in the snow?”
“Can’t catch me,” she said and slipped her legs into faded legwarmers that covered her Moon Boots and were made from his jeans.
“But your shoulders. It´s cold outside.”
She gestured to him that he remain seated while she arranged hundreds of ski gloves in a pattern over old jumpers. She sewed and she stitched hands, wrists and fingers until a cuddle-warm cape was completed.
He clapped his hands. “My princess,” he said.
“Trash is my passion,” she said proudly.
He held out his arms. “My trashion is you.”

Third zipper necklace finished!

My third zipper necklace finished! This one will be sent to London to Susie Bubble who writes StyleBubble fashion blog. This piece is made from 12 jacket zippers handswen together. As you can see The necklace can be worn in many ways. Detail in front, back, under one arm and so on. There really is no "right way" to wear it. My necklaces are very adaptable to different kinds of outfits. The best way to wear them is attach them to the garment with safety pins to keep it in place. In the last picture you can see my best Agyness Deyn impression :))

This necklace is heavy for a piece of jewelry, 525 g (= 1,15 lb / 18,5 ounces). But after you attach it to your garment with safetypins (so it does not move) you can hardly notice it because the weight is distrbuted evenly around your shoulders. I´ve worn these with t-shirts and ball gown dresses. The zippes are layered so that the reverse side is all canvas (see necklace tutorial). This way it does not itch or irritate your skin because no metal areas touch it. It does not heat up in sunlight It´s actally very cool to wear outdoors.

Click to my Zipper necklace tutorial to see how I make these. If you want me to make you one, send me mail. I make custom orders!

Junk Beautiful interior design book

I love my local bookstore Hobboks. Every time I go there I spend at least two hours just reading craft books and having the complementary(!) coffee cup and cookies while sitting on a very comfortable couch. This is why small books shops kick departmentstore ass any day. You are able to spend time in them, talk with the expert staff and READ before deciding what to buy. I bought three wonderful books today: Junk Beautiful, a interior design book inspired by junkyard finds and repurposed materials, Workspaces by Martha Fay, an interior design guide for working spaces and Denim Mania, a jeans refashioning book. I´ll post about the two later but now to the most inspirational one:

JUNK BEAUTIFUL by by Sue Whitney and Ki Nassauer
Website: www.junkmarketstyle.com (sign in to see the good stuff..)

This is the best book on recycled and repurposed interiors and it is propably the greenest interior design book on the market. The Junk Market girls Sue and Ki have an impecable taste in decor style and original (and humoristic) ideas in their projects. All the projects, instructions and designs are very clever and presented beautifully. There is nothing boring to be found, even the layout is pretty. If you're into interiors made from repurposed materials (or if you just like thrifted old wood and metal things in your home) this is the book to buy! I also love the fact that this book costs half of all other interior books on the market (23 euro in Finland). Thank you so much for the authors! 5 stars. I´m so using this as my new home decor bible. I had to order also their first Junk book, Decorating Junk Market Style: Repurposed Junk to Suit Any Decor.

Then I was doing some google searches this evening for something complitely different and stumbled upon Morgan´s lego-belt tutorial. How simple solution! I mean it is always like that isn´t it? Simple just works! Great job girl! Now the only question is how will a make this work for a belt buckle for guys??

Zipper necklace in progress

Susie´s zipper necklace is now pinned. I hope she likes the form. I have to get more pins tomorrow and start the slow process of detaching this piece from the dummy. Plus the handsewing. If you want to see all the making off steps, go to my Susie´s zipper necklace set in Flickr.

Sandra Backlund creations

I read an article from the Swedish Elle about artist Sandra Backlund. She is a swedish fashion designer specialized in handknitted pieces with volume and organic shapes. Read the complete article here: PAGE 1 and PAGE 2. I think her Clothes Pin dress is quite amazing and it has a very scandic look to it.

Trashion lunch

I love bagels. And here you see the perfect trashion-way to take your take-away lunch with you to work. Idea and instructions from Acorn Studios.

Suits you Girl! A reconstruction by LauPre

Crafster hosted a challenge last December to buy something under 20$ and reconstruct it to something new. The winner of the "Super Ugly to Super Awesome" challenge is Sad Suit to Ruffle-y cute by LauPre! Once a sad, sad over-sized frumpy business suit, LauPre transformed it into a super cute and funky outfit! Fab job girl!!

Mens secondhand suits make perfect material for clothing reconstruction projects since they are easily available, usually cheap but very good material to easy to sew (most are wool and wool-mix) and work with. I have also made a dress from a suit (+ corset) and found it to be one of my favorite projects. LauPre also has a blog (and Etsy shop). Check out her tutorial on making buttoned spats/legwarmers.

Make Art not Trash (trashion links)

Art for housewifes has collected a huuuge list of artists that use trash and recycled materials for their works. The site itself is a bit confusing, but the links are great. This should keep you busy surfing the interweb for a few afternoons.

Shoe chair by Willie Cole "Made In The Philippines"

Necktie dress by Post Decadent Trashionista

Post Decadent Trashionista made a beautifull dress and stole by using my tie-feather tutorial. Well done girl! I´d definately wear this to a party :)

Trashion spring trend - Spats

I´ve always loved 20´s fashions and those Poirot-styled anckle-thingies called spats. A long time I thought they were just for guys but recently I have found many creative people that make them also for women. I made a spat-pattern for myself in 2 hours last weekend out of oven paper. I recommend making your own patterns because it is the only way to have them perfect. When the pattern is done, you are able to modify it by changing hight and fastenings. Incase you think they can be made in only one style, here´s some inspiration. I hope spats will be a big trend in footwear fashion this summer and next fall. So far it´s looking good.. At least Style.com thinks so.

Elizabeth Melinek takes spats design into new hights. Her brand Strumpets has a selection of gorgeous and feminine anckle fashions. Unfortunately you cannot buy these online, but they are available from many shops in over 12 countries.

POSSO The Spat is the first design project from POSSO by artists Marylouise Pels and Vanessa Giovacchini. Their spat design style is modern and has loads of club-potential. If these are not THE thing in SS08 footwear trends then what are?

Spatterdash by Tallarida offers more classic ancklewear for women and men.

I love this piece of fashion because it can be worn with any kind of shoes. Depending on the design style it can be very (gentle)manly or ladylike. Like these victorian styled spats from Maide.

Or punkstyled with combat boots like these red spats by StraightRazorSlasher at Etsy.

Zipper collar

These zipper collars seem to have become my signature trashion thing. Here is my latest. I made it for my dear friend who took this lovely picture of it. This collar has been reconstructed from 12 metal jacket zippers. It took 3 hours to pin these onto the mannequin and 7 to sew them together by hand. I´m not a very fast seamstress... Check out my ZIPPER COLLARS SET for more pics. If you´re lucky you might be able to see this live in New York in a few weeks! My friend who I made this collar for is going to be there in the beginning of April.

Photograph: Mikko Rasila
Model: Maryam R. / ModelBoom
Hair & Makeup: Muru

I cannot take full credit for the original design since Comme Des Garçons (SS05 collection) was the first designer behind this kind of zipper-use. See them from my inspiration books HERE and HERE.

My work is originally meant to inspire others to start crafting and creating things for them selves, so if someone sees my work and copies it, I´m just happy. But, with this technique it´s a bit difficult to make the collalrs exactly alike... That´s the beauty in crafting and DIY. 100% copying is impossible :)

My trashion skirt from mens trousers in episode of Kirppis (Finland TV1)

Finland YLE TV1 approached me a couple of months ago to apphear on their show called KIRPPIS. This show is being filmed live every Sathurday morning from my favorite weekend flamarket Valtteri in Helsinki. They have a short feature in the program where visiting designers turn something old to new. In my first episode (aired 23.2.2008) I sewed three men´s suit pants to a skirt. You can find the instructions from Kirppis website, but unfortunately they are only in Finnish. I forgot my camera home the day we shot this, so I do not have any good pics of the finished skirt. I´ll be doing a second show later this spring.
